In July 2014, Dr. Shawn T Joseph established the Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Department at VPS Lakeshore Hospital. Since then, the department has grown to be one of the best in the country, capable of addressing the most complex head and neck cancer cases. It is one of the country's few Head and Neck departments that performs the full range of head and neck cancer surgeries, including microvascular reconstruction, transoral laser surgery for larynx malignancies, and endoscopic skull base surgeries. During the last seven years, the VPS Lakeshore Head & Neck Surgical Oncology Department has done over 3000 major head and neck cancer procedures of varying complexity. During this time, a strong Head and Neck Cancer Disease Management Group could be formed by working closely with departments such as Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Neurosurgery, Pathology, Radiology, Endocrinology, and Rehabilitation Sciences. Data on cancer and surgical result metrics are documented for periodic analysis and improvement to maintain track of the Head and Neck cancer scenario in the community and to improve outcomes. In terms of surgical margin clearance and survival rates, the Head & Neck Surgical Oncology Department at VPS Lakeshore matches the finest in the world. The head and neck oncology department at VPS Lakeshore uses ""No face scar surgery for oral cancer,"" which tries to prevent facial incisions in patients with mouth cancer whenever possible. The Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Department has the most published series of facial artery-based myomucosal and bone flaps, a reconstruction method that provides like-for-like reconstruction in head and neck mucosal abnormalities. He was also the leader of the team that described ""TAMMIL", a new technique for maintaining voice in certain laryngeal tumours for individuals for whom full removal of the voice box was previously the sole option.
